Finally getting some speed

For a while I’ve been trying to focus my runs on speed training, whether it is doing tempo runs or doing intervals. Long slow runs, what used to be my every day thing, are a thing of the past right now. And I kinda miss them, but the time for them will get here when I start getting ready for longer races again, by the end of the year. I haven’t forgotten about long training sessions, I am just doing them on the bike right now.

Three weeks ago I started a training plan from runners world for the Human Race in august 31. According to the training plan I was supposed to do my ‘regular’ runs at a 11:07 pace, and Wow! was it hard for me to keep that pace!! I had always focused on long distances before that!! But slowly, day by day I’ve been improving little by little, increasing my fitness level and feeling more comfortable when going faster.

Last night I was scheduled to run 5 miles, and I decided to test my self and go faster than I was supposed to, just to see if the training had any good results for me so far. Well, I ran the 5 miles at a 9:23 pace without getting too tired, It´s great to see how the training is improving my speed so far. I know that it’s nothing to brag about, since most of you ‘experienced runners’ are faster than that, but it’s nice to see small improvements on my speed. There’s still a long way to go to reach the point that I want to be at, but seeing small improvements helps me stay motivated.

Well I’m going out for a run now, I’ve got a 5 mile tempo run scheduled for today!! See you all in blogland, have fun!!

  1. Great job on the improved speed! As much as I used to despise speed training, I come to like it somedays because it is an easy way to show improvement. 🙂
